Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer’s disease was first identified in 1907 by Alois Alzheimer. At that time is was classified as a rare disease but today it is one of the top four causes of death in the elderly. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain which is diagnosed in part, using diagnostic imaging such as an MRI or a CT scan. One of the main focuses in Alzheimer’s research today is in the use of imaging (CT Scans, MRI) to diagnose the condition in the very early stages.
Neuroimaging is more commonly used to detect other conditions presenting similar symptoms to Alzheimer’s such as the presence of tumors, large or small strokes or fluid build-up caused by head trauma. Medication side effects and Parkinson’s Disease can also produce memory loss and other symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s.
